Point Blank are back with another Track Breakdown, this time with production duo The Fanatix to unveil the magic behind their Nicki Minaj and Vybz Kartel-featuring track, ‘Touch Down’, with Stylo G.

The Fanatix are a UK-based production outfit that specialises in dancehall, hip-hop and rap. During their career, the producers have worked with a star-studded line-up of musicians, including David Guetta, Stylo G, Ms Banks, Popcaan, Nicki Minaj, M1llionz and others.

In this tutorial, Point Blank show how you can use Logic Pro X’s Phat FX to enhance a group of drum tracks, giving them added punch, as well as making them sound like they’ve all been recorded through the same desk in the same environment.

Phat FX is a powerful “colouring” multi-effect designed primarily for use with drum, bass and guitar parts, adding warmth, punch and presence where required. It can, of course, be used with any type of signal. Phat FX combines several effect processors, filters and modulators in a flexible tool that can be used to quickly enhance your projects.

For this tutorial, Point Blank show how you can add “air” to your track during the mastering process, to give the final result a super clean and sparkly sound.

Adding air to your mix is the method of boosting high frequencies around the 15-20K Hz range and can be achieved by utilising EQ. It’s a subtle technique mastering engineers use to add clarity to the sound and give the audio a more open and airier feel.

Sidechain compression is a ducking effect that can be used to separate different elements in your track. It usually works by one element being sidechained by another and cancelling out a certain sound or frequency. It’s a great tool to use if you’ve got clashing elements or frequencies in your track such as a kick drum and bass and can result in a much cleaner sounding mix.
