When you think of the American dance music landscape, cities like New York, Chicago, Detroit and LA most likely spring to mind. Yet Echostage has made Washington DC the ultimate destination for Stateside clubbers. The venue — launched in 2012 by District Of Columbia promotion company GLOW, on the site of what had once been DC Tunnel and DC Star — has steadily risen up the league table, thanks to its state-of-the-art sound, synapse-sizzling visuals and a level of production that would put most festivals to shame. Echostage has revolutionised clubbing in the US, shipping in talent from around the world and booking the biggest American artists to play both live shows and DJ sets on its mammoth hybrid stage.

Taking up over 30,000 square feet, Echostage has all the trappings you’d expect of a No. 1 venue. The soundsystem is a d&b audiotechnik V-Series with D80 amplifiers, pumping out 48,000 watts of superior sound, while the senses are further stimulated by dazzling lasers, confetti cannons and cryo-jets. The capacious, warehouse-inspired space is flanked by 60-foot bars, while a VIP mezzanine perches above the dancefloor, kitted out with a plethora of bottle-service tables. This attention to detail complements the artists that Echostage showcases: household names from across the dance music spectrum. REZZ, Armin van Buuren, Eric Prydz, Black Coffee and Claude VonStroke all played before the pandemic hit, indicating the venue’s skilful bookings across house, techno, trance, progressive and EDM styles, while the club has also hosted gigs from famous pop and hip-hop artists such as Lorde, Miley Cyrus and Cardi B.

Like most clubs around the world, the pandemic forced Echostage to close its doors to the public until recently, but it still broadcast DJ performances online during the lockdown.

“We did a couple of DJ livestreams with Insomniac, including Loud Luxury and Deep Dish, as well as a livestream with Dubfire for DJ Mag,” says Echostage’s Heather Church. “It was difficult to find talent locally since most artists live in California or overseas. We’ve been extremely grateful to host weekly live streams every Sunday with Passion City Church. It’s provided the community with much-needed strength through difficult times.”

The Mayor of Washington DC announced on 14th May that venues would be allowed to reopen on 11th June, and after being shut for 15 months, Echostage endeavoured to prepare something special for its dedicated crowd.

“With the notice of reopening, we put together plans for some renovations,” Church says. “It was definitely a scramble, with only four weeks ahead of the reopening date.” Lighting upgrades and a special 4K LED wall were added to the already jaw-dropping visual displays in the club, while celebrated local artist Chris Pyrate was brought in to paint a new mural at the club’s entrance.

Meanwhile, for the reopening itself, a spectacular array of artists was secured to ensure the return would be memorable.

“We reopened with our dream line-up, featuring two nights of Zedd, two nights of Tiësto, David Guetta, Alesso, Tchami and more,” says Church. “It was such a great feeling to walk through the doors for the first time for a real show with fans. The appetite for concerts was through the roof.”

Though 2020 was tough for Echostage and its staff, Church says that the team pulled together and found strength in its sense of community.

“It was undoubtedly a difficult year for our employees, but they returned as if they had never left for our reopening,” she says. “We are grateful and fortunate to have a staff that feels like family. Echostage would not be where it is today without our devoted employees.”

Though not steeped in the same house history as cities like Chicago or New York, Washington DC has its own rich dance music legacy stretching from the percussive funk subgenre go-go through to famous modern acts like Deep Dish, Thievery Corporation and Beautiful Swimmers. Echostage is the jewel in the crown of a thriving electronic club scene there, expertly mixing marquee names with more underground fare. The club has just booked basketball legend turned bass music star Diesel (aka Shaquille O’Neal) and trance heroes Tritonal and Cosmic Gate, and looking ahead, there will be appearances from tech-house crew CamelPhat, dubstep titan Flux Pavilion, and superstars like Carl Cox, MK and Above & Beyond in the next few months.

“Echostage is No. 1 in the world, in the capital of the United States,” Church says. “Washington DC has become one of the most sought-out places for artists to play and will continue to grow in that direction. There’s something special about being able to play in DC and then do late-night tours of the White House, National Monument and Jefferson Memorial… while still buzzing from the crazy fan energy at your show.”

Eye-catching lasers, cryo-jets, confetti cannons, a d&b audiotechnik V-Series audio system and sprawling, high-resolution LED walls sound like the trappings of a festival main stage — but there’s one East Coast venue that has all this fanfare and more packed inside. This epicentre of entertainment is known as Echostage, and at 30,000 square-feet, it’s Washington, D.C.’s largest nightlife venue.

Established in 2012 by GLOW (the District of Columbia’s longest-running electronic music promotions company), Echostage rose to prominence during the height of America’s EDM boom, and has been delivering top-notch nightlife experiences to a wide range of music lovers ever since. In the past year, both live acts and headlining DJs like Black Coffee, Skrillex, Illenium, FISHER, Martin Garrix and DJ Diesel (aka Shaquille O’Neal) have filled the main room to its 3,000-person capacity, blasting their hits across Echostage’s newly upgraded four-channel D80 amplifiers. These rattling badboys produce upwards of 48,000 watts of sound, sending fans’ eardrums on an auditory adventure they’re unlikely to forget.

However, it’s not just the bumping soundsystem that makes this warehouse-inspired behemoth tower above the rest. Echostage’s designers have always strived to deliver the full multi-sensory experience to the club's tens of thousands of annual attendees. This is accomplished in part thanks to the expertly designed layout, which includes two 60-foot bars that flank the dancefloor. Either in line for a frosty brew, or perched near the railing of its spacious VIP mezzanine, Echostage audience members can expect to catch unmatched views as the club’s unobstructed sightlines ensure that there’s no wrong way to indulge in the visual feast that sits at the head of Echostage’s ever-packed dancefloors.

In 2017, Echostage called upon its most technologically savvy enthusiasts to design a backlit LED wall in a contest that saw one lucky innovator take home $2,500 and leave a lasting legacy installed within the hallowed space. Last year, Echostage introduced a brand new state-of-the-art, 16x30-foot LED addition, fulfilling a goal to always remain on the cutting edge of production.

After the first year in action, Echostage cracked DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs poll, entering in the 38th position in 2013. Since that hot debut, the hybrid live concert venue/nightclub has continued to steadily climb the ranks. In 2019, Echostage dethroned Ibiza institution Ushuaïa from its No.2 stronghold, making it the highest ranked North American venue yet. And in 2020, Echostage holds onto a place in the top three, while securing the highest North American club gong for the fourth year in a row. “We are grateful to the dedicated fans who take the time to attend our shows every week and look forward to an exciting year,” GLOW's CEO, Pete Kalamoutsos, tells DJ Mag.

Heralded as a hybrid nightclub and concert space, and drawing inspiration from electronic music’s warehouse roots, Washington D.C.’s cavernous Echostage is a seminal venue in the East Coast dance music scene. Founded in 2012 by GLOW, the city’s longest-running electronic music promotions company, Echostage opened with the mission of entertaining the local, burgeoning dance music fanbase as well as accommodating the expanding technical needs of live acts. As such, the GLOW team selected the 30,000-square-foot venue thanks to its large main room, which features unobstructed sight lines to provide a mesmeric sound and lighting experience. With a capacity of 3,000 attendees per night, Echostage is Washington D.C.’s largest nightlife concert venue.

Echostage brings the festival feeling to the nightclub year-round, allowing attendees to escape the East Coast weather conditions while still enjoying full-scale production they’d be hard-pressed to find at another indoor venue. Utilising a D&B V-Series audio system and a massive 14-by-40-foot LED screen, Echostage employs a bevy of lasers, cryo jets, intelligent lights and confetti cannons. Last year, Echostage upped the ante when they upgraded their D&B sub amps to powerful four-channel D80 amplifiers which doubled the amount of available power — up to 48,000 watts on the subs alone. The home improvement also included the installation of a new main 30-by-16-foot hi-resolution LED wall.

The venue’s talent programming runs the electronic music gamut, with global headline acts such as Diplo, Galantis, Alison Wonderland, Sasha & John Digweed, Kaskade, Rezz, DJ Snake and even Shaq taking centre-stage during this last year alone. World-renowned names like David Guetta, Tiësto, Above & Beyond, Hardwell, Skrillex and Armin van Buuren continue to return to the club for frequent performances, consistently met by packed dancefloors.

Thanks to expert architectural planning and layout design, there’s no bad place to view a show in the house. A clear line of sight from everywhere mean patrons can watch the performances from anywhere they choose in the behemoth space, including the two 60-foot bars running along each side of the dancefloor, the VIP mezzanine area above, or even in the middle of the swelling crowd. The all-encompassing audiovisual experience curated by Echostage promises a good time for die-hard dance fans and clubbing connoisseurs alike.

Having first landed in the chart at number 38 back in 2013, Exchange has been rapidly climbing places ever since — breaking into the top 10 two years ago. Our 2019 poll finds Echostage on the march once again, now snatching second place from Ibiza superclub Ushuaïa. This marks the first time there’s been no White Isle club in the top two since 2010 (when the UK’s Sankeys MCR and Fabric held the spots) and is the highest a North American venue has ever placed.

The vision behind Echostage was always clear: a hybrid nightclub and concert venue that offers an immersive outdoor festival experience year-round with the comfort and convenience of an indoor space. Finding that sweet spot between the intimacy of a nightclub/concert venue and the bombast of a festival was born out of necessity to satisfy the growing EDM fanbase in Washington, D.C., and meet the ever-evolving technical demands of DJs and live acts. The team behind GLOW, the city’s longest-running EDM promotions company, answered that call with Echostage in 2012, which has since grown to become one of the most coveted venues on the East Coast.

The building where Echostage calls home is ideal for ravers and music lovers; housed in a warehouse space reminiscent of early-day electronic music culture, the venue features a large main room with unobstructed sight lines. Echostage then comes to life via its enhanced production and sound and lighting setup, which includes a D&B V-Series audio system, a giant 14-by-40-foot LED screen, tons of lasers, cryo jets, intelligent lights and confetti cannons. Collectively, it all offers a performance-centric production value rarely seen in an indoor setting. Echostage recently upped the production ante, upgrading the D&B sub amps to powerful four-channel DNB D80 amplifiers, a move that doubles the amount of available sub power, up to 48,000 watts on the subs alone. The venue also recently installed a new LED wall to further enhance the visual experience.

This is the reason why the biggest names in dance music have made Echostage a can’t-miss stop on their US tours, with recent bookings running the genre gamut: Diplo, Alison Wonderland, Sasha & John Digweed, Kaskade, REZZ, DJ Snake, Above & Beyond and many more. Whether you’re a festival veteran, a club-hopping raver or a live music fanatic, Echostage offers a taste for everyone.

Echostage DJ Mag Top 100 Clubs 2017

The team behind GLOW, D.C.’s longest-running EDM promotions company, opened Echostage in September of 2012 to satisfy both the increasing number of EDM fans and the technical demands of DJs and live acts. Created as a nightclub/concert venue hybrid, the building was initially chosen for the large main room and unobstructed sightlines — the perfect canvas for creating an unparalleled immersive environment. Currently, they have a D&B V-Series audio system, a 14 by 40 foot LED screen, cryo jets, intelligent lighting, and confetti cannons, which combine to give a performance-centric production that mimics an outdoor festival experience. While that’s always been their ethos, they’ve focused on upping the ante over the past year, expanding their LED panels and number of lasers. It’s no wonder they host the best of the best — the past year has seen Mashmello, DJ Snake, Armin van Buuren, and Diplo come through their doors — and why they’re one of the most coveted locations on the East Coast. Essentially, Echostage caters to the festival snob, the club snob, and the music snob, so no matter where you lean on the entertainment scale, you’re sure to fall in love with this venue.

The team behind GLOW, D.C.’s longest-running EDM promotions company, opened Echostage in September of 2012 to accommodate both their growing crowds and the increasing tech requirements of the acts they booked.

Built as a hybrid between a nightclub and a concert venue, Echostage is not open on a fixed weekly schedule, but instead is anchored around GLOW’s lineup, which has included Disclosure, Armin Van Buuren, Skrillex, Twenty One Pilots, Morissey, Above & Beyond, Hardwell and more.

See? Multi-purpose and multi-faceted to the max. At its core though, Echostage is built to dazzle on EDM nights. In a warehouse space reminiscent of dance music’s roots, there are no interruptions for the audience’s sight lines (or ears, for that matter) as they’re pummelled with everything from a D&B V-Series audio system to a massive 14 x 40 foot LED screen.

Over the past year, they’ve upped the ante even more, adding additional lasers, intelligent lighting and even more LED panels around the venue, meaning patrons are blasted with pretty lights, confetti or cryo no matter where they stand in the club. Hit us with those laser beams!
